All Formula V air race pilots must hold a valid FAA pilots license. A Commercial, limited Commercial or ATP license is required. Each pilot must have at least 500 total hours in any aircraft, at least 10 in the specific raceplane to be raced, and pass a New Race Pilots Test administered by Formula V. This test evaluates mental attitude, flight skills, basic aerobatics, race course flight and emergency procedures. A pilot successfully passing the new race pilot test is issued a "Letter of Air Racing Competency". This pilot testing and certification program is very similar to the ACE program for airshow aerobatic performers.

Formula V Air Racing conducts an annual training and certification session just before the first race of the season.
